Visual Art
We recently had a group of LHS students who competed in the State Visual Arts Scholastic Event. Please allow me to share their success:
* Jordan Clough and Trenton Easley both earned an "Excellent" rating
* Melissa Hildenbrand and Taylor Smith earned a rating of "Superior"
* Taylor Smith received the highest honor, a “Gold Seal Award”. In addition to the award, Taylor also earned a small art scholarship. Only 127 "Gold Seals" were awarded out of 20,433 entries this year. Taylor is Lovejoy's first "Gold Seal" recipient
Athletics
* The boys’ golf team took second place at District. The team members were Chris Tadvick, David Whitman, Hayden Marsh, Trey Cano, and Tripp Hise. Robin Red advanced to regionals for the girls
* Boys’ and Girls’ track teams have also met success this spring. The Girls won the team title while the boys placed 4th, narrowly missing 3rd place. 13 boys/13 girls will advance to the Regional meet to be held on May 1-2 in Commerce at Texas A & M
*
More Tennis News. Price Smith placed second in the regional tournament and will advance to the state tennis tournament. Kenny Sweeney and Alex Brown placed third in this tournament and will serve as the alternate team to the state tourney
National Merit Scholarship Program
Lovejoy High School had 5 students qualify for the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program based on their 2008 PSAT test scores. These five students scored amongst 50,000 of the highest scoring participants of some 1.5 million program entrants. Of the 50,000 , 16,000 will be names National Merit Semi-Finalist and approximately 34,000 other high scorers will be commended for their performance on the PSAT/NMSQT . They will learn of their standing in September. Semi finalist will be the only students who will have the opportunity to continue in the competition for about 8,200 National Merit Scholarships to be offered in 2010.
The five students are:
Danielle Corley
Brittany Cox
Kyle Karnuta
Alec Parkinson
Morgan Thompson
VISUAL ART
Twenty-seven students participated in the Area 10 Visual Art Scholastic Event this past Saturday. The students entered 36 artworks. Students had a short interview with an art professional and then their artwork was assessed by the same judge. Of these 36 artworks, 24 received a rating of "Superior," which included several with perfect scores. The other 12 received a rating of "Excellent."
A panel of judges determined that four of our students were in the top 10% of those in attendance. They will represent Lovejoy at the State Level Event. This will be held at the University of Houston-Clear Lake campus, in mid April. The students selected for this honor were Jordan Clough (second year in a row), Trenton Easley, Taylor Smith and Melissa Hildenbrand. We are both tremendously proud of all the students who participated! They represented Lovejoy extremely well!
